W. A. S. Benson
(1854-1924)
William Arthur Smith Benson was educated at Oxford and initially decided to train as an architect. Friendships with Edward Burne-Jones and William Morris reinforced his desire to work with his hands & in 1880 he opened his first workshop making furniture that was sold by Morris & Co. W A Benson & Co. became highly successful and the next 10 years saw major expansion with a factory in Hammersmith and a shop in Bond Street making art metalware for table use and for oil, gas & electric lighting fittings. Benson advised on lighting schemes in churches & public buildings including St Paul’s Cathedral and some of the colleges at both Oxford & Cambridge University.
